Can You Mix Vape Juice?

“Can you mix vape juice?” Wait… do you not already? Oh my fair summer puffer, raised on a diet of locked disposables and sealed flavour pods. You’ve yet to experience the joy of bolding, crossing two streams of e-liquid, and unlocking a flavour greater than the sum of its flavourings.

So let’s change that! The quick tl;dr answer is, “Yes, you can mix vape juice. But,” because there’s always a but. There are a few rules and issues to consider when blending different flavours, brands or even nicotine and VG/PG ratioed e-liquids together. But follow these guidelines, and you’ll mix vape juice by the evening.

Is It Okay to Mix Vape Juices?

But of course! And to be fair, I can appreciate any trepidation you may feel. E-liquid is a bit special, after all, isn’t it? It’s not quite recreational, and (as a retailer, I legally should emphasise that) it’s not medical either. It’s a flavoured substance that you’re using to treat your smoking habit privately.

So, any nervousness around the idea of blending nicotine-infused e-liquids, I get it, you know? But one purpose of this article is to soothe any qualms and let you rest assured that it’s never dangerous to mix vape juices! There are just more innovative ways of doing it than others.

What to Consider Before Mixing Vape Juices?

But hold your horses there, pardner! Before you roll up your sleeves and get mixing, there are things to consider. E-liquid comprises several components, and each has a part to play when two bottles of e-juice collide, particularly if they’re from different brands or contain different VG/PG and nicotine volumes.

Final Nicotine Strength

A very, very important note to remember is that blending two e-liquids with different nicotine strengths will result in a dilution and rebalance to a new strength, one that may not always be easy to predict.

Imagine you’ve got two glasses with orange squash in them. The left is weak and significantly diluted, and the right is painfully strong and sweet. Mixing the two won’t make them both weak or strong; it will result in a new equilibrium somewhere in the middle.

It makes sense, doesn’t it? So you’ll understand why mixing a 10ml bottle of 10mg and a 10mg bottle of 20mg will result in a 15mg average between the two strengths. Here’s a helpful e-liquid mixing calculator if you’re working with unequal measurements.

PG/VG Compatibility

Like nicotine strength, PG/VG contents can vary drastically across different vape juices, and blending liquids that are too different is going to result in a messy situation that some call “vape soup.”

You likely already know that different VG/PG blends are for different coils and kits. A 50/50 e-liquid is perfect for a high-resistance coil fired at moderate 9w-15w outputs. But an 80VG/20PG vape juice will only work with sub-ohm coils fired by a far more powerful vape mod.

If you mixed two 10ml bottles containing the two respective e-liquids mentioned above, you’d get 20mls of 65VG/35PG e-liquid. If you wanted an MTL juice, too bad. If you wanted cloud city, not thick enough.

So, consistency is key if you have a vaping style you prefer to stick to. Don’t be a madman and try to convert a high-VG vape juice into a 50/50 unless you really want an insane project that no one but you is going to enjoy.

Flavour Combination

Now, this issue is more common sense. Flavour pairing is generally an easy principle, but we all know someone who likes to get ‘inventive’, don’t we? And if you don’t, maybe it’s you. Maybe YOU’re the one who put raisins in the mashed potatoes. You monster.

If you’re just making it for yourself, who cares, right? But we all like to show off our creations, and if you’re a bit uncertain about what goes with what, here’s a helpful DIY e-liquid flavour pairing guide you can follow.

And remember, it’s a common-sense thing. Orange and lemon? Zesty! Tobacco and cream? Decadent! Menthol tobacco and… chocolate milkshake? I dunno about that one, man.

Nicotine Type

Another matter to consider is the variety of nicotine in your mix choices. Obviously, mixing freebase with freebase and salts with salts is fine, but blending different types of solutions may have unwanted effects.

Namely, the advantages of freebase and nic salts will be equally compromised and diminished. The characteristic freebase lung/throat ‘kick’ will be muted, and the smooth, gentle inhale provided by nic salts will now be rougher and less easy to take down.

The best move is to keep like with like when it comes to nicotine solutions.

What Are the Benefits of Mixing Vape Juice?

So why do this, anyway? Well, there are a number of good reasons, some pragmatic and others more creative. Sometimes, it’s about making ends meet until you can afford some more vape juice, and sometimes, it’s just about exploration.

  • Using up bottle-ends: Why carry two 10ml bottles of the same flavour/strength when one has 2ml left and the other 6ml? Combine and streamline!

  • Balance your nicotine: While we advised against blending different nic strengths, it can be worth trying if 10mg is too weak and 20mg is too strong for you.

  • Flavour dashes: Sometimes, a few drops of mentholated or icy e-liquid can make fruity vape juice sing. Or perhaps you’d like a little cherry flavour in your cola vape juice.

  • Waste not: Who wants a bunch of old bottles rattling around? Are you looking to clear up a little? There’s no harm in blending that 3ml of mango and 3ml of pineapple you have left and tossing the bottles out!

  • A Hint of Thiccness: This is less orthodox, but some vapers like a touch more VG in their MTL vape juice for a smoother puff. This is fine to experiment with as long as you aren’t massively affecting the VG/PG ratio overall.

Mixing Madness: Final Thoughts

As you can see, mixing ready-to-vape e-liquids is possible, but it’s not without its pitfalls. Hopefully, now that you’re aware of those, you can get to work putting together great vape flavour combos! And if you really dig the idea of DIY vaping, check out our How to Make E-Liquid guide.
