Can You Use DL E-Liquid in an MTL Tank? A Compatibility Guide

You’ve just picked up a bottle of e-liquid, only to realise it’s the wrong type for your device. Before you fill up your MTL tank with that high-VG DL liquid, you need to know what will happen.

The simple truth, in short? Mixing incompatible e-liquids with the wrong tank type leads to burnt coils, harsh hits, and wasted money. Let’s break down why DL liquid doesn’t work in MTL tanks and what you should use instead.

TL;DR: Can You Vape DL Liquid on MTL Tank?

  • No, don’t do it. DL e-liquids are too thick for MTL coils and won’t wick properly.
  • You’ll burn out coils fast. MTL wicking holes can’t absorb thick, high-VG liquid quickly enough.
  • Use 50/50 VG/PG or high-PGinstead. Thinner liquids are designed for MTL devices and deliver better flavour and coil life.

The Short Answer: Why It Doesn’t Work

DL (“direct lung”, meaning the inhale method) e-liquids typically contain 70% VG or higher. This makes them thick and syrupy, designed for sub-ohm tanks with large coils and wide wicking channels. On the other hand, MTL (“mouth to lung”) coils are the opposite. They have tiny wicking holes designed for thinner liquids, such as 50/50 VG/PG blends.

When you try to use thick DL liquid in an MTL coil, the cotton simply can’t absorb it fast enough. The coil heats up without sufficient liquid saturation, and you end up vaping dry, scorched cotton instead of smooth vapour. And once a coil is scorched, it’s done. That’s a chemical change you can’t fix; you must replace it.

E-Liquid Tank Compatibility: A Quick VG vs. PG Guide

Understanding the difference between VG and PG helps explain why using high VG juice in MTL coils causes problems.

Liquid TypeViscosityBest ForMain Purpose
VG (Vegetable Glycerin)ThickDL / Sub-Ohm TanksVapour Production & Smoothness
PG (Propylene Glycol)ThinMTL TanksFlavour & Throat Hit

VG produces thick clouds but flows slowly. It tends to be smoother on the throat, with vegetable glycerin being a common natural cough-syrup ingredient. PG is runnier, carries flavour better, and provides that satisfying throat “kick” sensation MTL vapers want. Your coil’s wicking material needs to match the liquid’s thickness, or you’ll face serious performance issues.

What Happens When Using High VG Juice in an MTL Coil?

Here’s what you can expect if you ignore the compatibility warnings:

Immediate Dry Hits

Your first few puffs might taste acceptable, but you’ll quickly experience harsh, burnt cotton flavour. The coil heats faster than the thick liquid can saturate the wick, leaving dry spots that scorch.

Rapid Coil Burnout

MTL coils aren’t cheap, but they’ll become useless within hours, sometimes just a few puffs, when used with high-VG liquid. The burnt residue bakes into the cotton and metal, making the coil unrepairable.

Tip: Keep in mind that coils don’t last forever.

Muted or No Flavour

Even if you manage to avoid complete burnout temporarily, the flavour will be disappointing. High-VG liquids don’t carry flavour as well as balanced ratios, and the poor wicking makes it worse. Even for the few seconds that it works, the minimal amounts of vapour you are able to generate from the MTL coil, and MTL power output, won’t carry the same volume of taste as you’d receive from a sub-ohm coil’s huge output.

Tip: If you are using the right e-liquid PG/VG for your tank but still getting muted flavour, we have some tips and tricks to help you get more flavour from your vape.

Can You Use MTL Liquid in a DL Tank?

The reverse scenario, putting 50/50 liquid in a sub-ohm tank, also creates problems, though different ones.

    • It Causes Leaks: Thin MTL liquid flows too easily through the large wicking ports of DL tanks. You’ll find juice seeping from air holes and flooding your device.
    • Harsh Vaping Experience: The higher PG content in MTL liquids creates a strong throat hit. When vaped at the high wattage DL devices use, this becomes painfully harsh and unpleasant.
    • Dangerously High Nicotine: MTL liquids often contain 10-20mg nicotine or nic salts. Vaping this concentration at sub-ohm power levels can deliver an overwhelming nicotine rush that causes dizziness & nausea.

The golden rule works both ways: match your liquid to your device type.

    Best E-Liquid for MTL Coils

Now that you know what doesn’t work, here’s what does.

For MTL vaping, stick with 50/50 VG/PG blends or liquids with even higher PG content. These flow properly through small wicking holes whilst delivering excellent flavour and that satisfying throat sensation.

Nicotine salts have become the go-to choice for many MTL vapers. They provide smooth nicotine delivery at higher strengths (10-20mg) without the harshness of freebase nicotine. This makes them perfect for ex-smokers transitioning to vaping or anyone who wants effective nicotine satisfaction without heavy cloud production.

Note: Nicotine salts are different from freebase e-liquids.

The MIST Originals range began in 2011, and offers 35 unique flavours covering all flavour bases, from tobaccos to creams to fruits and mints.

Note that the MIST Originals range is available in five different nic strengths, and uses freebase nicotine for a punchy throat hit.

The IVG Intense Salts range is particularly zesty and varied, with great fruit and fizzy drink combos mixed at a 50/50 ratio and available in 10mg and 20mg nic salt strengths.

Tip: When shopping for MTL e-liquid, always check the bottle label for the VG/PG ratio. If it says 70/30 or higher VG, save it for a DL device.

Match Your Juice to Your Coil

E-liquid compatibility isn’t complicated once you understand the basics. Check your liquid’s VG/PG ratio and match it to your device type. This simple habit saves money on replacement coils and ensures you get the flavour and performance you’re paying for.

    Remember:

    • For MTL tanks, use 50/50 VG/PG or high-PG e-liquids.
    • For DL sub-ohm tanks, stick with 70% VG or higher.

Follow this rule, and you’ll avoid burnt coils, leaks, and disappointing vaping sessions. Your device and your wallet will thank you.
