Nic salts use benzoic acid to smooth out the inhale, whereas traditional MTL e-liquids use standard ‘freebase’ nicotine, which has a notable rasp in the throat and chest that some enjoy, whereas others find it offputting in MTL vape juices.
Nic Salts are technically a variety of mouth-to-lung e-liquid rather than an alternative, but they use a new ingredient in the brewing process that makes nicotine salt e-liquids stand out.

What is the Best PG/VG Ratio for MTL E-Liquid?
MTL e-liquid and nic salt e-liquids will almost always have a vegetable glycerine ratio of 50 or less, though there are a few outliers, like the Orange County CBD range. If a vape juice has a vegetable glycerine ratio of 70 or more, that’s not going to work well in a mouth-to-lung vaping tank.
If you’re uncertain as to whether you’re looking at an MTL or DTL vape juice, the best way is to check the VG/PG ratio. Vegetable glycerine (VG) and propylene glycol (PG) are the ‘base blocks’ of 99% of e-liquids, and the mix ratio of VG and PG determines both the viscosity and purpose of the e-liquid in question.
Any e-liquid with a VG ratio of higher than 50% is generally considered a DTL e-liquid and is often too thick and gloopy to absorb efficiently into coils designed for mouth-to-lung e-liquid.
