Messless

Designed for leak-resistant sub-ohm vape use

Vaporesso has always known its way around innovative sub-ohm tank designs, and the iTank 2 showcases its expertise in various ways.

Based on our experience, most sub-ohm tanks can sometimes be messy, so we’re pleasantly surprised that the iTank 2 has a built-in self-cleaning system that ensures your hands will remain juiceless.

If you’ve been frustrated by tank disassembly in the past, you’ll also love the iTank 2’s button-release refill mechanism. Many companies have tried to do the button release on their sub-ohm tanks, and we’ve not encountered one as well made as Vaporesso’s offering with the iTank 2.

Another feature we like with the iTank 2 is the coils. The tank sees the return of the GTi Coil series, which will let you experience Vaporesso’s COREX technology that conveys MTL levels of flavour intensity through your sub-ohm tank.

The Vaporesso iTank 2 is a stunning piece of kit, laden with advanced features yet simple enough for an absolute beginner to master it instantly. Easily our best sub-ohm tank for 2023.

Pros

  • An advanced yet affordable sub-ohm tank
  • Richly flavourful and cloudy coils
  • Highly leak-resistant design

Tri-Air: Three air inlets for maximum clouds
Quiet Puffs: Reduced noise when inhaling
Leakless: Condensed juice reservoir prevents e-liquid leaks

Of course, the main reason people engage in sub-ohm vaping is to create huge clouds from sub-ohm tanks, and the Voopoo Uforce-L Tank is laser-focused on doing just that.

Every aspect of the Uforce-L has been geared towards emitting the most considerable clouds possible. The tank features leak-proof airflow slots on the top, with a remarkable three inlets to provide the most air circulation possible with every inhale.

Due to the unique design of the inlets, we were surprised to find that the Uforce-L is almost entirely silent, a far cry from the usually distinctive ‘hiss’ given off by most powerful sub-ohm tank units.

The Uforce-L is compatible with the full range of Voopoo PnP Coils. While not the most advanced mesh coil range by any means, it covers a broad spectrum of resistances, giving you even more control over how large and corporeal your clouds will be.

The Voopoo Uforce-L Tank is a sophisticated tank built for both clouds and stealth, a rare combo that you’ll love if you’re a cloud chaser.

Pros

  • Vast airflow for huge clouds
  • Stealthy sub-ohm vaping with reduced sound
  • Heat sink prevents the tank from raising in temperature

Cons

  • Large, tall design with exposed glass
  • The airflow control slider is a little loose

Top Shelf: Top-based airflow control prevents spills
Honey Honey: Honeycomb airflow ports provide precise control
Rubber Ring FTW: Five separate leak-preventing rubber partitions

While SMOK has always been praised for their sub-ohm tanks, they have suffered from some leak issues. The T-Air Subtank seeks to address these issues, and we found that it did so very adequately, providing us with a marvellously cloudy inhale without anything escaping from the airflow ports.

Part of the winning formula of the T-Air Subtank is in the airflow placement; by being situated above the e-liquid chamber, there’s no issue of gravity and pressure forcing e-juice out that way, ensuring you can enjoy a cloudy puff without getting sticky fingers.

The adjustable airflow is remarkable for other reasons as well. A unique honeycomb design means you have far more precise control over how open or close the airways are, giving you more cloud control than you get with most sub-ohm tanks.

So if soggy fingers are a frustration you’ve had enough of, consider the SMOK T-Air Subtank for a mess-free vape setup.

Pros

  • Highly leak-resistant build
  • Exact airflow control system
  • Dual filling system for quick top-ups

Cons

  • Coils can only handle 70W maximum
  • No sliding top-fill system

Premier Postless: Postless deck for optimised building
Air Bending: External airflow control system
Both Worlds: DIY clouds with standard tank conveniences

Continuing our look at rebuildable setups, we appreciate that not everyone wants to reapply juice frequently, nor does everyone have access to a squonk mod.

If you want to enjoy DIY-level cloud production with more convenience, then you can’t do better than an RTA like the Hellvape Dead Rabbit 3.

Basically, an RDA but with a TPD-compliant e-liquid tank capacity, the Dead Rabbit 3 does an outstanding job of leak prevention by placing the airflow slider above the juice section.

The 25mm postless deck provides an accessible space to work in, letting even the thickest fingers do the delicate work of installing your own sub-ohm coils.

The Dead Rabbit 3 also comes with two pre-made NiChrome coils that are easy to install, letting you immediately sample the kinds of flavour and cloud production that only DIY devices are capable of.

Pros

  • Streamlined DIY coil tank
  • 2ml e-liquid reservoir
  • Postless deck for ease of coil building

Cons

  • Difficult to master
  • Wide-bore drip-tip is too large for some

Nice NiChrome: NiChrome coils provide improved flavour
Tuff Enough: Increased steel protection
Close It Up: Tighter airflow for increased depths of taste

We’ve always felt that Aspire were one of the few manufacturers capable of marrying function with elegance, and the Atlantis GT delivers on both fronts while also surprising us in terms of flavour potential.

Similar in bulk to MTL tanks such as the Nautilus 3, the Atlantis GT features far less exposed glass than any other Aspire tank, making it far less likely to break in the event of a drop.
Past the hexagonal honeycomb window guard lies the coil, an interesting new release from Aspire called the Atlantis SE Coils range. These mesh coils stand out because rather than the usual kanthal steel, they opted for NiChrome, a material often used in DIY coil building.

This results in a cloudier experience and a far more flavoursome one than we initially expected!

The airflow inlets are a little thinner than on the other sub-ohm tanks featured today, which will have a slight negative impact on your cloud production. What it’s also going to provide, however, is a tighter, more concentrated ‘beam’ of vapour, making the Aspire Atlantis GT Tank the best sub-ohm tank for flavour.

Pros

  • More durable than many sub-ohm tanks
  • Unique coil materials for improved taste
  • Thinner air-ports result in more concentrated flavour

Cons

  • Bulky build
  • Unique drip-tip not to all tastes

Squonk Ready: Perfect for use with Squonk mods
The Ultimate: Ultem material used for heat diffusion
Goalposts: Semi-postless deck for coil installation ease

Sub-ohm tanks are the best way for most people to enjoy big clouds. However, RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomiser) devices are how you get the biggest clouds possible.

Rebuildables will often be overlooked because it’s a hassle to frequently reapply fresh e-liquid to your exposed coils. Still, squonk-ready decks like the Vaperz Cloud Sith RSA Tank provide a brilliant alternative.

Once equipped with a bottom-feeding pin, the Sith RSA can be fed fresh juice with just a light squeeze of your Squonk mod’s bottle. While it took some time to set up, our team found it remarkably streamlined once everything was ready to use.

The Sith RSA also uses Ultem materials in various places to provide heat management, which is useful when setting a mod to TC or Bypass modes.

The heat sink design also prevents temperature build-up within the semi-postless deck, ensuring better longevity for your coils.

Pros

  • Squonk-ready RDA/RSA
  • Heat-sink tech prevents overheating
  • Easy coil installation

Cons

  • Not for beginners
  • Low-profile drip-tip not to all tastes

FAQ

What is a Sub-Ohm Tank?

A sub-ohm tank is a vape tank that takes low-resistance coils. While traditionally, this meant any coil with an ohmage of less than 1.0ohms, but these days it means a coil with a resistance of less than 0.8ohms.With these coils, sub-ohm tanks sat atop the best vape mods can atomise thicker e-liquids with a high-VG content, resulting in large clouds.

What is the benefit of a sub-ohm tank?

While a sub-ohm tank is no good for replicating the cigarette experience, many vapers enjoy using them for exhaling large, eye-catching clouds.

E-liquids with high-VG contents – such as those used in sub-ohm tanks – are often a lot smoother to inhale. This results in some new vapers switching to sub-ohm tanks, as they may find MTL vaping too rough on the throat and chest.

Can I use 50-50 juice in a sub-ohm tank?

We wouldn’t advise using 50/50 e-liquid in a sub-ohm tank unless that tank can be equipped with a higher resistance coil.

Sub-ohm tanks are likely to suffer leak issues when using a thinner e-liquid than it was built for, and the PG content can be very harsh when inhaled in vast, sub-ohm quantities. For good high-VG e-liquid recommendations, we suggest you check out some of our best shortfill vape juice options.

How do you get more clouds with a sub-ohm vape tank?

To get more clouds from your sub-ohm tank, be sure to follow all of these tips:

1. Use an e-liquid with a VG content of 70 or above, as VG is what generates thicker clouds.
2. Use the lowest coil resistances you can find – between 0.4 ohms and 0.15 ohms – with your vape mods set to an appropriately high wattage output.
3. Open your sub-ohm tank airflow inlets as wide as possible, as a greater airflow will generate more clouds with every inhale.

What is DTL vaping?

“DTL” describes the inhalation method used with a sub-ohm tank. Short for “direct to lung,” it highlights how a sub-ohm tank is often used like an inhaler; you draw the smooth vapour directly into your lungs when breathing in for a direct lung draw.

The opposite of this is “MTL,” which means “mouth to lung.” Generally most people use MTL kits by drawing vapour into the mouth then taking it down to the lung with a subsequent inhalation. MTL is closer to the sensation of smoking a cigarette, whereas DTL – direct lung draw – is more like shisha smoking.

What E-Liquid Should I Use in a Sub-Ohm Tank?

Sub-ohm tanks are designed to take ‘thicker’ e-liquids, which pretty much always means vape juices with a high VG ratio, usually around 70VG/30PG or 80VG/20PG.

Using e-liquid with a 50/50 or high PG ratio is risky, as the sub-ohm tank’s coils are designed to absorb thick, gloopy liquids, and the runny consistency of 50/50 and high PG liquids is likely to cause a leak issue. For more guidance, read our what is a high VG vape juice guide.

What Nicotine Strength Should I Use in a Sub-Ohm Tank?

This is entirely up to you, however we do have some cautious advise. It’s often a good idea to stray on the lighter side of nicotine when buying juice for a sub-ohm vape tank, as the tank will be producing a vast amount of vapour which may be unpleasant if the nic strength is too high.

Consider it this way; a pint of beer and a shot of whiskey will both have the same effect, however one is a more concentrated, intense experience while the other is a more relaxed session experience. In this example, the beer is the sub-ohm tank and the whiskey is the MTL tank.
