Voopoo DRAG S review

£34.99

Today we’ll be examining Voopoo’s groundbreaking new pod vape – the DRAG S. The Voopoo DRAG S is a far cry from some of the devices we’ve come to expect from Voopoo, such as the absolute unit that is the DRAG 2. But then if we go Goldilocks-size-comparison we also have the miniscule DRAG Nano 2 to consider. So let’s take dive into our Voopoo DRAG S review.

Design & build quality

The Voopoo DRAG S boasts style and solid construction in equal measure.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty guts-n-bolts of the DRAG S, let’s just take a moment to appreciate the time that went into designing this beauty; showcasing a construction of metal alloy and leather, the vape has an extremely comfortable grip and never feels unwieldy or rough in the pocket.

Just up top you’ve got airflow with smooth control and down at the base we’ve got a Type-C USB port for charging – much faster than the traditional Micro USB and with a far sturdier charging port.

Three metal buttons dot the surface, with the obvious larger fire button cut with a slight thumb groove for comfort.

There is something about the Voopoo DRAG S which brings the Geekvape M100 Aegis Mini 2 to mind; perhaps it’s just the leather grip but the entire build screams “durability” from every angle.

Voopoo eschewing traditional glass tanks for the acrylic PnP Pod supports this idea, and we’ll take a closer look at those later.

The DRAG S houses an incredible 2600mAh battery; keep in mind that it is extraordinarily rare for a vape of this size, a POD VAPE no less, to have anything higher than 1000mAh.

What’s more, the unit has a wattage range of 5 to 60W; in terms of raw power and optimisation the DRAG S is outperforming industry favourites such as the Innokin Coolfire 4 and the SMOK RPM40.

The unit does have a bit of a heft to it, weighing in at 150g. Not pocket-destroying by any means, but heavy enough that you’ll notice if it’s missing.

Features & Functions

The Voopoo DRAG S is built with a plethora of functions to meet the future of vaping with confidence.

It’s traditional for pod vapes to suffer in regard to display and navigation of digital menus, but that’s not the case here! The DRAG S boasts a 0.96” TFT display screen, offering full-colour overviews of your power capacity and output levels and user-friendly controls for function switching and puff count.

Never afraid to mix fun and function, the DRAG S even features unlockable ‘achievements’ which are awarded to those able to withstand the full force of this beast, though these are of course optional and not necessary for the discerning vaper who just wants a moderate-yet-unbelievably-flavoursome vape for the workplace.

The three-button interface allows you to access every function without ever getting lost in obscure menus. You’ve got a nice big fire button up top, and two power control buttons down at the base.

Hitting the fire button three times allows you to cycle functions, holding ‘Power +’ and ‘Fire’ at the same time locks everything except the breath function, which is never at risk of accidentally firing.

To explain that function a little better; with just a simple button-push you can switch to puff mode, which begins the vaping process the moment you begin to draw air through it and ceases the moment you stop.

It’s a unique mode which leads to smooth, casual vaping and also seems to help those new to vaping who haven’t quite gotten used to pressing a button for their nicotine satisfaction yet.

Voopoo Drag S – How to use/button functionality

The button combinations on the Drag S are as follows:

  • Powering on & off: Tap the fire button 5 times.
  • Changing modes: Tap the fire button three times to change from ‘RBA’ to ‘smart’ modes. The DRAG S also lets you change between drag and button tap firing.
  • Locking & unlocking the device: Hold the up button and power button at the same time.
  • Clearing the puff counter: Hold the bottom button and power button at the same time.
  • Puff counter: Hold both up and down buttons at the same time to display a graph that shows your puffs each day. This information is stored for two weeks.

Set the device time: Hold all three buttons simultaneously to set device time. You must make sure to do this for the puffs per day graph to be correct.

Voopoo Drag S pods/coils

Voopoo’s PnP Pod system challenges what you can expect from pod vapes.

Let’s get into the aforementioned PnP Pods for a moment, shall we? Held firmly in place via magnet ring, the pod is primarily constructed from a durable acrylic, granting full transparency and allowing you to always know what your e-liquid levels are at a glance while also preventing the pod from reaching uncomfortable temperatures.

Refilling is simple and fuss-free with the flexible hatch on the base, and for changing the coils it seems they took a lesson from the SMOK Nord’s pull-and-push simplicity.

The coils themselves are expertly constructed with mesh interiors so as to cut down on the likelihood of dry hits and burnouts, and come in a range of resistances from 0.15 to 1ohm.

There is an RDA attachment available for those with an enthusiasm for coil-building, with an additional power function designed specifically for the DIY masters out there.

If you’re not quite ready to get onboard the pod train, Voopoo intends to release a 510-thread adaptor in the near future, meaning you’ll be able to attach any number of tanks to the DRAG S’s substantial, compact battery.

Battery life & charging

2600mAh with rapid Type-C charging means the Voopoo DRAG S will never leave you wanting for long..

With the aforementioned 2600mAh internal battery you’re easily looking at a full day’s vaping, if not more.

If you tend to keep things in the 40-60W range you’re probably best to give it a charge every evening, but if you’re caught unawares there’s no need to worry – the DRAG S charges rapidly thanks to the Type-C charger, with the screen displaying how far along the charging process is.

Performance

Voopoo’s DRAG S boasts vast clouds without ever sacrificing depth of flavour.

It’s an incredibly flavoursome vape with the potential for vast cloud production, thanks in no small part to the huge airflow and brilliantly designed mesh coils.

You’ll find that they rewick pretty much immediately so you won’t have to wait long between big puffs. The button-fire activates in 0.001 seconds, so it’s a very immediate blast of flavoursome plumes.

The button-fire can actually be quite forceful, so if you’re a bit more moderate in your vape you might want to opt for the puff activation mode. You’ll find the DRAG S just as enjoyable even if you aren’t trying to unlock those hidden achievements!

The verdict

The Voopoo DRAG S is the vape of the summer; pocket size power in a stylish unit.

The Voopoo DRAG S is one of the very best pod vapes we’ve ever had the joy to play with. It’s got something for everyone, though it must be noted that while higher resistance coils are available it is primarily designed as a sub-ohm cloud vape.

With an in-built power setting for RDA coils and the planned release of the 510 tank adapter, Voopoo have clearly built a machine designed to be future-proof.

If you’re as impressed as we are order yours today or come on down to one of our stores to ask one of our specialists if it’s likely to suit your requirements.
