Vaporesso LUXE XR MAX 2 Review

The Vaporesso LUXE XR MAX 2 is a unique vape kit that marries the convenience of a pod system with sub-ohm cloud production. Traditionally a difficult blend, yet Vaporesso have crammed a great deal of power and functionality into a remarkably pocket-friendly kit. Having received the MIST award for best sub-ohm pod mod in 2025, I would like to devote some time to a focused review of this vape kit.

LUXE XR MAX vs XR MAX 2: What’s the Difference?

Photo showing the difference between LUXE XR MAX vs LUXE XR MAX 2

The LUXE XR MAX 2 improves upon several aspects of the original kit while staying true to the initial design philosophy of big power and easy portability.

The LUXR XR MAX 2 increases the battery capacity from 2800mAh to 3200mAh, a noticeable 500mAh difference. The display has also been upgraded, with the 0.54″ OLED and RGB LEDs replaced by a 0.96″ TFT screen of exceptional clarity and detail.

While they aren’t exclusively compatible with the LUXE XR MAX 2, the new dual-mesh coils have been introduced with the newer device and deliver much richer flavours. And one of the less noticeable yet most important changes is the addition of a physical lock switch on the base of the device.

Build Quality and Design

Visually, the LUXE XR MAX 2 closely resembles the original device. However, a close look reveals numerous alterations and improvements.

The kit’s face is partially covered with translucent acrylic, revealing part of the interior chipset, with the TFT screen ensconced between these chip panels. The screen itself is very bright and colourful, with text and numbers that are very legible. By default, the screen is set to maximum brightness, which is very clear in the dark. This brightness can be lowered in the kit’s menu. Navigating power settings and menu options is easy with a combination of ‘left/right’ touchscreen taps and intuitive firing button combos.

The firing button on the front of the device is identical to the one on the previous version of the kit, and it can be made optional for those concerned about pocket-firing.

A glance at the base of the device reveals three things: the USB-C charging port, a soft silicone layer to prevent scuff when placing the kit down, and a dedicated button lock switch. With this active, the firing button will do nothing beyond putting a ‘LOCKED’ message on the screen, ensuring safe travels.

The airflow slider on the side of the kit is delightful, in my eyes. Much larger than sliders usually are, and grooved for maximum control and comfort. The slider’s size lets you be very precise about how much airflow you want, and it doesn’t wiggle on its own, so I never have to worry about my airflow changing without me noticing.

One rather nice difference in build design is the inclusion of a pleather patch on the back of the device, which I found comfortable and good for gripping. The previous kit merely had an acrylic shell on the back, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much more comfortable the LUXE XR MAX 2 was to hold.

The pods are very well built and arrive with pre-installed, removable GTX coils. The DTL pod, which has a 0.2ohm coil, has a wider airflow inlet, and the mouthpiece is pursed in a way that facilitates nice, big lungfuls, whereas the MTL pod is a touch more restrictive and better suited to the 0.8ohm coil installed. Refills are performed by removing the pod and pulling up a rubber hatch on the base. Admittedly, I prefer a top fill, so I don’t need to remove the pod, but it’s a minor issue.

Setting Up the LUXE XR MAX 2

Despite being a sub-ohm kit, the Vaporesso LUXE XR MAX 2 has clearly been designed for easy use, which is welcome when you consider how technically complex a lot of traditional sub-ohm vapes are. Below are a few tips for setting up the kit, and each step is simple and beginner-friendly.

Turning On the Device

Switching on the kit requires five rapid taps of the firing button; it also switches it off completely. As a side note, it may be worth switching on the button lock before turning it off to prevent putting your coil through unnecessary stress, particularly if you vape at high wattages.

Inserting the Coil and Filling the Pod

Installing a new GTX coil involves pushing it into the aperture at the base of the pod. Flat and rounded edges on the coil’s base will help you rotate it into the correct alignment, at which point it will sit flush with the rest of the pod’s base. Removing the coil is the same as doing it in reverse; grip the edge of the coil and pull. For cleanliness, it’s best to empty the pod before removing the coil!

Adjusting the Wattage

The kit’s optional Smart mode is activated by default, and so when you insert a pod with a coil installed, the kit will automatically read the coil’s resistance and set an appropriate wattage. You can change the wattage by tapping the firing button 3 times and using the left- or right-hand touchscreen icons to move through the wattage range.

Toggling the Menu

Accessing the LUXE XR MAX 2’s menu is done by tapping the firing button twice, which opens a menu with numerous power and customisation options. Navigating the menu and making selections are done with the touchscreen left/right icons and the firing button.

The menu lists these options:

  • Settings (power settings)
  • Pulse (Specific power firing for increased flavour)
  • Eco (Uses less power and saves battery life)
  • Smart (Automatically detects optimal wattage)
  • Themes (Select from different screen themes)
  • Exit (Return to the homescreen)

Features and Performance

The LUXE XR MAX 2 features several modern features and is primarily geared towards casual sub-ohm use, enabling large amounts of vapour without the need for external batteries or complex mods.

One of the bigger features in the device is Vaporesso’s AXON chip, which provides not only Smart mode functionality, but also powers the kit’s Pulse mode.

The primary function of pulse mode is to provide consistent flavour, regardless of battery life. Even when mostly depleted, the kit still fires like it’s fully charged, meaning a low charge doesn’t result in a less satisfying puff.

Smart mode, of course, automatically sets the ideal wattage for the given coil, while the also-featured Eco mode limits power use and extends your charge for much longer. Essential, for those times when you aren’t going to be near a power source for the next few hours.

Customisation doesn’t end at power settings, either. Like many other kits released lately, the LUXE XR MAX 2 lets you choose among three screen themes, each with distinct colour, text font, and info arrangement. While it may seem like a small matter, a vape that can evolve and change along with your moods is a kit that’s closer to your heart, and as such, one you’re less likely to give up on.

Coil Life and Flavour

The GTX coils return again, featuring as they did with the original LUXE XR MAX. However, the internal structure has been reworked to feature a dual-mesh heating apparatus in the range’s sub-ohm options.

Having used both kits, I can confirm that the new dual-mesh GTX coils provide a much richer flavour (which, admittedly, is certainly aided by the device’s consistent outputs from its Pulse functionality).

And while the kit is clearly primarily intended for sub-ohm use, we can’t just brush off the inclusion of an MTL pod and coil as an afterthought. Vaporesso clearly want this kit to become the daily driver for many people, a vape capable of more than just cloud kicking. And I confirm that the 0.8ohm GTX coil (which Smart mode handily assigned a 16W output) is delivering exceptional taste clarity.

And not for nothing, but dual mesh coil structures always tend to last noticeably longer than solo-mesh coils. So ideally, you’ll change coils every 2-4 weeks rather than every 1-2.

Battery Life and Charging

The LUXE XR MAX 2 sees a 14% increase in battery capacity, adding 500mAh to the previous kit’s 2800mAh, resulting in a hale and hearty 3200mAh, with no detectable increase in weight between the two kits.

Even at higher outputs, 3200mAh can easily last for days. Admittedly, if you’re constantly chain-puffing at 80W all day, then sure, you’re likely to get about 1.5 days of use before needing a recharge. But thankfully, Vaporesso saw fit to equip the kit with 2A charging, so you’ll be able to get an entirely depleted battery mostly maxed out in about an hour.

And if you don’t have time for full charging, get it halfway, and Eco mode will easily get you through until you can use a charger again.

Do I Recommend the LUXE XR Max 2?

I definitely recommend the Vaporesso LUXE XR MAX 2 Kit, and to more vapers than I initially thought I would. It’s a superb portable sub-ohm pod kit that slips neatly into your pocket, and that alone is a strong argument.

But aside from that, it’s also a great all-around vape kit, even for MTL vapers. I’ve found myself going back to the MTL pod more and more as it does a marvellous job of flavour carrying and consistent quality.

Who won’t I recommend it for? People who enjoy external-battery mods and RDA coil-building. Everyone else I can think of would be more than satisfied with what the LUXE XR MAX 2 can do, and that’s no small feat.
