Vaping is a scene which very rapidly grew into a fully-fledged sub-culture with it’s own terminology and patois.
It’s fun having a bunch of acronyms and abbreviations that only the Super Cool Vapers know, but to the outsider who’s looking to reduce their smoke intake, it can be a little intimidating.
Here at MIST we’re eager to make everything as accessible and approachable as possible. Today we’d like to explain some terms which will make choosing your vape device simpler.
What is Mouth to Lung Vaping?
M2L, also known as “mouth to lung,” is the style of vaping that most accurately simulates the act of smoking a cigarette.
The vapour is drawn into the mouth, much like drinking through a straw, before being drawn down into the lung with another breath.
A mouth to lung kit is traditionally on the smaller size, often a simple battery & tank setup or compact pod system designed for ease of use, as most recent smokers/new vapers will likely opt for an M2L kit.
The reasons for this is that M2L vapes use a thinner variety of e-liquid; in terms of chemical composition it means that the e-liquids propylene glycol (PG) content is equal to or higher than the vegetable glycerine (VG) content.
To the outsider or new vaper these terms may seem meaningless, but what it equates to is an e-liquid which produces only a moderate to low amount of cloud while also delivering a hefty ‘hit’ to the throat and chest upon inhalation. M2L is the style of vaping which most accurately simulates the sensation of smoking a cigarette.

What is Direct to Lung Vaping?
D2L, on the other hand, is short for “direct to lung.” Using a D2L kit is much like using an inhaler; instead of drawing the vapour in you simply breathe it directly to the lung.
D2L kits are traditionally on the larger side, as they often require bigger batteries or have more features, though this isn’t a hard rule and many D2L kits are now being released which are far more compact and discreet.
D2L kits utilise a thicker e-liquid, one in which the VG content is higher than the PG. This equates to a bizarre paradox; far, far more clouds, but also smoother and easier to inhale! The reason for this is that VG (vegetable glycerine) is a common ingredient in many cough syrups, and is extremely unlikely to result in coughing or soreness.

What Should I Be Using?
It’s not so simple as all that; every potential vaper has a unique set of needs and requirements, it’s not one-size-fits-all. There are, however, a few questions that can help narrow down exactly what you’re looking for.
Would you rather…
- A) Replicate the cigarette experience
- B) Try a different means of nicotine delivery
- A) Exhale a moderate, negligable amount of vapour
- B) Exhale a large, thick plume of vape
- A) Focus on satisfying nicotine cravings and gradually low nicotine strength
- B) Focus on flavour and performance with nicotine as a secondary but still present aspect
If you find yourself attracted to the A answers then you should definitely come to one of our stores to ask about M2L vape kits. We have a variety of different units with features sure to meet your specific requirements.
If you’re more a B kinda person then ask us about our D2Ls, check out some of our tasty flavours and get ahold of a serious cloud machine. There are of course kits that do a fine job of both M2L and D2L, so if you’re looking for a versatile machine then come on down to check our selection.
